I have loved and enjoyed music since I was a very young child. I remember dreaming of one day being a big singing star. Unfortunately my horrible stage fright really ruined things for me. I never could seem to get brave enough to let others hear me sing solo. My Choir teachers through the years obviously heard potential in my voice. They always wanted me to sing a solo, but I could never work up the courage to get up and sing solo. I did a couple of duets, but I mostly stuck to singing within the choir. You know, where no one could hear just me!
When my husband Dan and I and our family joined Beacon Baptist in 2003 things changed. We both joined the choir, and after much persuasion from our Choir Director Arthur Spriggs, I stood up on the stage in our Church and sang a solo in front of everyone on Palm Sunday of 2004. I sang Via Dolorosa, and it was just awesome! I think everyone was surprised by the Spanish, I know I was surprised that I was able to even learn it, let alone get up there and sing it, and alternate between English and Spanish. I did though and everyone loved it. I sure was scared though, as one gentleman said, "I was shakin' in my boots"! LOL
Since that day I have done a solo every chance I get, and it has gotten to where I am not so nervous any more. I know now that God gave me a voice in which to sing and shout Praise and Glory to His Holy Name, and I am going to do just that every chance I get.
I did my very first performance on, July 4th, 2005 at the Shelby County Fair, in Shelbyville, Indiana. The singing was easy, but talking to everyone at the beginning, in between songs, and at the end of the show, was not easy at all. I just cannot talk to a group of people! I can sing just fine now, but I am terrified to talk. I guess I better get over that fast.
Two of my daughters Debby and Danie, sang "The Gift Goes On" with me, and I sang "The Lord's Prayer", "Via Dolorosa", "It Is Well With My Soul", "Every Heart That is Breaking", "Whole Other World" and "How Great Thou Art".
Since July 4th, the only singing I have done was in the musical Godspell which I was a member of the cast and got to sing "Day By Day". To read more about my wonderful experience performing in Godspell, Click here. Godspell ran the last two weekends of July, and was awesome all 6 nights. It was a sell out show 4 out of the 6 nights, and the other two nights were all but sold out. The final show was not only a sell out, but people paid to stand at the back of the theatre too!
Since Godspell our family has moved to a new Church, and I am now in the choir at our new Church as well as on the drama team. We are going to be doing a skit around a beautiful song that I just love called "No Room". We will do a little "Christmas hustle and bustle" skit, then Dan will read a narrative and then I will sing "No Room". We will be doing this skit on December 4th, 2005, at Hope's Point Baptist Church, 1700 S. Miller Ave., Shelbyville, IN. If you are in the area stop in and join us for the morning. We have a wonderful Church and you will feel right at home, and the message will be quite powerful I'm sure, it always is.
